Your organization exists to do science. Technology is the infrastructure that makes that possible. When it works well, your researchers barely notice it.
But when it's fragile, fragmented, or just not keeping up with what your team needs, it starts to cost you. Data that should be searchable isn't. Your engineers are pulled in too many directions. Important architectural decisions keep getting pushed to next quarter. And somewhere in the background, competitors with better-organized systems are moving faster.
You didn't build a research organization to spend your leadership time managing technology problems. That's where I come in.
My core areas of expertise are data management and AI, and those happen to be the two areas where growing scientific organizations most often need help. I've spent 17 years working deeply with complex database architectures and more recently have been building production LLM-based AI systems. I know how to make your data work harder for your researchers.
I design and build data hubs and concept-based search systems that let your scientists find what they need based on scientific concepts, not just exact keywords. That means less time searching and more time doing research.
Poor data practices with AI just produce poor results faster. I help teams build AI tools on clean, well-structured data so the results are actually useful, and your scientists stay in control of the quality.
I work with your engineers to establish shared standards and clear processes, so they can focus on the work that matters instead of fighting fires or reinventing the wheel.
I help non-technical executives understand what their technology is actually doing for the business, so you can make confident decisions about where to invest and how to move forward.
This works best when there's a strong fit on both sides. Here's an honest look at where I add the most value.
It's a free, 30-minute conversation. We'll talk through your research goals, the technology challenges getting in your way, and whether a Fractional CTO engagement makes sense for where you are right now.
I'll dig into your data pipelines, your team's workflows, and your current AI readiness. From that, you'll get a prioritized technology roadmap tied directly to your research and business objectives.
With the right technical leadership in place, your engineers have clear direction and your scientists can focus on what they do best. Technology stops being the bottleneck.
Founder, 4V Services
Fractional CTO
I'm a pragmatic technical leader with over 30 years of experience helping companies get more value out of their technology. I founded 4V Services and built a team that has delivered over $11 million in value to clients ranging from innovative startups to Fortune 500 companies, including some of the world's leading scientific and life sciences organizations.
Two areas define most of my work. I've spent 17 years working with complex database architectures, designing data hubs, enterprise search systems, and semantic enrichment pipelines for scientific organizations. More recently, I've been building production-grade LLM-based AI systems that help technical teams work smarter without sacrificing accuracy or rigor.
I focus on building systems and teams that work in the real world. That means creating an environment where scientists and engineers communicate openly, and helping leadership understand what their technology is really doing for the business.
I offer three engagement models, depending on what level of support makes sense for your organization right now.
A fractional CTO embedded in your business. This is the deepest level of involvement. I join your leadership team and take direct ownership of your technology strategy, data architecture, and engineering execution.
Strategic guidance without the day-to-day involvement. I provide consistent architectural oversight and leadership direction without being embedded in your operations. A good fit if you have a capable engineering lead but want senior-level input on the big decisions.
A 4-hour information session for your leadership team. If you're not ready for an ongoing engagement but need to elevate your team's knowledge, this is a good starting point.
The Challenge: A national research laboratory needed to improve how researchers found content across their systems (including SharePoint, Google Drive, and Confluence) while respecting strict security protocols. The core problem was that keyword search couldn't bridge the gap between how scientists ask questions and how documents are written. Researchers were spending too much time searching and not enough time doing research.
What We Built: A unified, concept-based search engine integrated with a custom domain ontology developed in partnership with the lab's scientific staff. Researchers can now find documents based on scientific concepts rather than exact keywords, and the system fully respects each source system's existing access controls.
The Result: Researchers spend less time on administrative searching and more time on the work that matters. Discoverability improved significantly, and the system continues to support the lab's security and compliance requirements.

The Challenge: A global life sciences organization had years of valuable research data spread across legacy systems with complex security requirements. Scientists were spending too much time manually gathering data and not enough time analyzing it.
What We Built: A series of content hub systems with semantic enrichment and custom taxonomy mapping, giving scientists the ability to explore the organization's data by concept rather than by navigating individual systems. We also built analytics to track how researchers were using the systems and whether they were finding what they needed.
The Result: The team shifted from manual data gathering to analysis and decision-making. The engagement has continued for years, built on a foundation of quality work and transparency.
"I had the pleasure of working with 4V Services to process large volumes of unstructured text and extract insights that were critical for our business.
